Colorado ranchers want fossil fuel companies held accountable
Seven ranchers have filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court supporting Boulder and Boulder County’s lawsuit seeking to hold Suncor Energy and Exxon Mobil financially responsible for some costs associated with climate-related wildfires, drought, flooding and infrastructure damage. The ranchers argue they are not seeking additional regulation of fossil fuel production, but believe energy companies should share the financial burden communities and agricultural producers face from increasingly extreme weather. Several western Colorado counties oppose the lawsuit, warning that holding oil and gas companies liable could threaten an industry that provides significant jobs and tax revenue to rural communities.
