POSTVILLE, Iowa — Multiple fire departments from across northeast Iowa responded early Tuesday morning to a major fire at the Agri Star Meat and Poultry Plant in Postville, sending a large, billowing plume of smoke across the region and prompting a smoke advisory for neighboring communities
Emergency crews have remained on scene Tuesday morning working to contain the fire.
In a statement shared on social media, AgriStar said emergency responders had been at the facility since early Tuesday and that "the safety of our team members, emergency responders, and the surrounding community remains our highest priority."
No injuries or fatalities have been reported and officials have not yet confirmed the extent of the damage.
The fire, which began around 4:00 a.m. Tuesday, could have significant economic consequences for the community. Agri Star is the largest employer in Allamakee County, and the apparent loss of the facility could leave hundreds of workers without income for an undetermined period.
Local rapid response networks formed to assist immigrant families during emergencies announced Tuesday morning that it is preparing to help affected workers and families.
Meanwhile, the Fayette County Emergency Management Agency issued a smoke advisory as the plume drifted east toward Fayette County, particularly the Clermont area.
Officials advised residents to:
- Limit prolonged outdoor activity, especially those with asthma, COPD, heart disease or other respiratory conditions.
- Keep windows and doors closed if smoke becomes heavy.
- Slow down while driving if visibility is reduced.
- Check on older adults, young children and others who may be especially sensitive to smoke.
The fire is the latest in a series of workplace incidents at the Postville facility in recent memory. A fire was reported at the plant in May, and an explosion occurred there in 2021.
The cause of Tuesday's fire has not yet been released, and it is unclear when the facility may be able to resume operations.
Update: Postville asks residents to conserve water
Due to firefighting efforts at the Agri Star facility, the City of Postville is asking residents to conserve water until further notice.
Residents are asked to limit water use to essential needs only and avoid activities such as watering lawns, washing vehicles, and running unnecessary loads of laundry or dishes.
Officials said conservation efforts will help ensure adequate water pressure and supply while emergency responders continue their work.
“We appreciate everyone’s understanding and support during this time,” the city said in a notice to residents.
