National Drought Monitor Update: July 28, 2026
Extreme heat and dry conditions expanded drought across much of the West, Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, while heavy rainfall improved conditions across the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Despite healthy reservoir levels in California and beneficial monsoonal moisture in the Southwest, much of the country is expected to remain warmer than normal, with continued dryness forecast for large portions of the West.
